The law dictates that people can't have more than three names, can't have last names as names, and can't be named exactly the same as a living sibling. There's even a list of approved names people can name their kids, featuring traditional names like Adriana and Lourdes and religious names like Abraham and Adan. However, we go by nicknames or variations of our middle names, which are all different. So my cousins and I are: Maria Cecilia, Maria Carolina, Maria Constanza, Maria Julieta, and Maria Eugenia. When it came to naming kids with my husband, we chose short and unique first names, and traditional Spanish middle names.

Edna Adan Ismail Fights for the Health of African Women

Edna Adan Ismail is renowned for her work as a nurse-midwife, but at first the job held little appeal. “Poo-poo, pee-pee, breast milk, babies screaming—midwifery was not really my first choice,” she admits. “It wasn’t even on my list of choices.” As the first Somaliland woman to receive formal nursing training in Britain, in the 1950s, she preferred the drama of surgery. She changed course only after her physician father, who had seen two of his children die due to obstetric mishaps, asked: “But how will you handle all the pregnant women who need your help?”

Adani Ports said Deloitte, which does not audit any of the other six listed Adani group companies, had all the necessary information and its reason to quit was "not convincing." "The spotlight is back on Adani Group stocks and this time the auditor has raised concerns and resigned. That has prompted many analysts to view the MORENA contest as an almost de facto presidential race. The poll showed that Ebrard was the best-known candidate, being recognized by 71% of respondents, while Sheinbaum was familiar to 66% of the public. Sheinbaum and Ebrard have long been favorites for the MORENA ticket. The poll showed the next-best placed candidate, former Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez, had 8% support, along with veteran leftist Gerardo Fernandez Norona. A survey published last month by Buendia & Marquez showed Sheinbaum polling at 32% support and Ebrard at 23% on the question of who should be the MORENA presidential candidate.

The fallout is a rare chink in Lopez Obrador's formidable popularity, steadily above 60% throughout his term. The pricing issue is urgent as northern corn farmers are harvesting now, many with nowhere to sell without taking a loss. It is not the first time that tensions have heated up between this administration and the agriculture sector. Valdez estimated that commercial agriculture producers represent about 10 million votes. Farmers argue Lopez Obrador's government has eliminated important sector benefits, including loans at beneficial interest rates, which his administration says too often fell into arrears.

Mexico interior minister steps down to vie for presidential bid

MEXICO CITY, June 16 (Reuters) - Mexican Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez has resigned from his post to compete for the ruling party's candidacy in next year's presidential elections, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday. Lopez Obrador said during a regular press conference that the interior minister had resigned the day before. The president did not immediately name a replacement, but said that Alejandro Encinas, who has led human rights issues for the ministry, would act as interior minister in the interim. Lopez's resignation follows that of former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who stepped down earlier this week, and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, whose last day in office is Friday. Opinion polls so far have tended to give Sheinbaum, who would be Mexico's first female president if she won, a slight edge.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) on Sunday agreed that on Sept. 6 it would announce the winner of its internal selection process. [1/4] Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard raises his fist while announcing he will resign next week to focus on winning the nomination of the leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) ruling party for next year's presidential election, at a hotel in Mexico City, Mexico, June 6, 2023. Mexico's U.N. ambassador Juan Ramon de la Fuente and ambassador to the U.S. Esteban Moctezuma are seen by many analysts as the favorites to replace Ebrard as foreign minister. As foreign minister, it is harder for Ebrard to address domestic issues than for Sheinbaum and Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez, another leading contender, Buendia said. Following Ebrard's announcement, MORENA party chairman Mario Delgado told Mexican radio the party's contenders would ultimately have to resign to ensure a fair contest. During Monday's meeting, Lopez Obrador said he had urged the party to remain united, and pledged not to influence the outcome of MORENA's internal contest.

Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez also plans to resign next week to focus on his own presidential bid, two government sources told Reuters. If MORENA's board decides that on Sunday, then interior minister Lopez and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, two other top contenders, would need to resign, Lopez Obrador said at a regular press conference. Lopez Obrador made the remark after observing that more contenders could follow Ebrard's lead in the next few days. Supporters of Ebrard argue his post does not allow him to focus as much on domestic issues as Sheinbaum and Lopez. Lopez Obrador did not immediately name a replacement for Ebrard, who is due to step down next Monday.

MEXICO CITY, June 6 (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he had sought to promote unity within the ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) during a dinner on Monday evening attended by the party's main contenders to succeed him. Ebrard is one of the leading contenders to succeed Lopez Obrador, though most recent polling has tended to give Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum a slight edge in the race. Lopez Obrador said Ebrard, Sheinbaum and Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez, another presidential hopeful, were at the dinner, where MORENA leaders congratulated party stalwart Delfina Gomez for winning the State of Mexico's gubernatorial election on Sunday. "And we also met to maintain unity, so that there aren't divisions," the leftist president told reporters. Shares of companies of the coal-to-airports conglomerate, controlled by billionaire Gautam Adani, were up between 1.2% to 7% in late trade on Friday in a largely flat wider market. The group's listed companies lost more than $100 billion in market value earlier this year after U.S.-based Hindenburg Research raised several governance concerns. The court on Wednesday granted SEBI additional time until Aug. 14 to complete its investigation into possible violation of securities law and regulatory disclosures by the Adani group. Beside flagship Adani Enterprises (ADEL.NS), other group companies include edible oils business Adani Wilmar (ADAW.NS), Adani Ports (APSE.NS), Adani Green Energy (ADNA.NS), Adani Transmission (ADAI.NS), Adani Total Gas (ADAG.NS), Adani Power (ADAN.NS), broadcaster NDTV (NDTV.NS) and cement units ACC Ltd (ACC.NS) and Ambuja Cements (ABUJ.NS). The panel said, citing SEBI, there was evidence of a build-up in short positions on Adani group stocks ahead of the Hindenburg report.
MEXICO CITY, April 26 (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador may return to normal activities as soon as this week as his COVID-19 symptoms improve, a top government official said Wednesday. Lopez Obrador on Sunday said he had tested positive for the virus, his third known infection, and would take a few days off. Speaking in the president's place at a regular news conference, Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez said Lopez Obrador's health was improving. "We think, and this is what the doctors say, that the president will be resuming his normal activities ... before the weekend," he said. Lopez Obrador, 69, who had a serious heart attack in 2013, reported mild symptoms from both of his previous bouts of COVID-19 at the height of the pandemic.
MEXICO CITY, April 24 (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is receiving medical treatment and self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19, the country's Interior Minister Adan Augusto said Monday in a morning press conference. Augusto said that Lopez Obrador was at the presidential headquarters and that the president had shown cold-like symptoms since Saturday. He denied a media report that the president had suffered a heart attack. This is the third known COVID-19 diagnosis for Lopez Obrador, 69, who had a serious heart attack in 2013. MEXICO CITY—Mexican federal prosecutors will investigate possible negligence in the response to a fire at a migrant detention center in the border city of Ciudad Juárez that left at least 38 migrants dead as actions of staff at the facility came under scrutiny, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Wednesday. A surveillance video shows migrants trapped in locked cells as the fire erupted on Monday night, while two guards appear to make no attempt to release the detained men as smoke filled the detention area. The authenticity of the video was confirmed by Interior Minister Adán Augusto López.
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico, March 29 (Reuters) - Migrants were locked in a cell as a blaze spread killing 39 people at a detention center in Mexico, witnesses and a survivor said on Wednesday, as Mexico's president vowed to bring to justice those responsible. "There'll be no attempt to hide the facts, no attempt to cover for anyone," he told a news conference in Mexico city. All the victims were male, and Mexico's government is under pressure to find out why they died after officials said the women migrants at the center were successfully evacuated. Outside a hospital in Ciudad Juarez, which sits across the border from El Paso, Texas, family members anxiously waited for news of their loved ones who had been injured in the fire. By the end of the video the smoke is so thick the cell can no longer be seen.
BENGALURU, March 9 (Reuters) - Indian shares are set for a muted open on Thursday, on concerns of a prolonged high-interest rate regime after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated his hawkish stance on the second day of congressional testimony. NEW DELHI, Feb 20 (Reuters) - India on Monday invoked an emergency law to force power plants that run on imported coal to maximise output ahead of an expected record surge in power usage this summer, according to an internal power ministry notice seen by Reuters. Reuters reported last month on India's plans to use the law to maximise coal power output. In the notice sent to all imported coal-based power plants, the ministry said it expects them to operate at full capacity and sell power to buyers on exchanges. India's imported coal plants have a total capacity of 17 gigawatts. India expects its power plants to burn about 8% more coal in the financial year ending March 2024, with increased economic activity and erratic weather to continue to boost growth in demand for power.
